BREAKING NEWS BREAKNG NEWS
On August 23rd there was an incident that happened at the Kent Island American Legion that your Legion had absolutely nothing to do with. Background: There was a private gun show that was held at the Legion on the 23-24 of August. The organizers of the gun show are not affilitated with the American Legion and had rented the hall months in advance for this weekend. Another organization outside of Baltimore apparantly follows these types events around the state and they arrived at the Legion and put up a tent and signs of a negative political nature which made it seem/appear that the Legion Supported.
After much discussions with the group and the help of the County Sheriffs Department the offending propaganda was removed from the Legion Property and moved across the street. The Legion can control what happens on our private property, however, we cannot control what happens on the street or across the street from the post.
As a Veteran's Organization our freedoms and our rights are very important to us and every veteran that has served in combat or support roles understands the sacrifice that may be asked of us so that you can enjoy your basic rights and freedoms as Americans.
With that said, the American Legion is non political.
This means that we allow no political propaganda, no campaiging on our property, unless all views or candidates are equally represented such as a meet and greet or a town hall.
This particular group didn't ask the Legion if they could set up. When they were told to leave they said they had permission from the State Police because they were on a legal right of way meaning where they sat up was public property which later was proven that they were wrong. Once they realized they were on private property they removed the signs from the Legion property and moved them to the other side of the street which is public property and not in control of the Legion.
We are extremely sorry that this incident happend, we are extremely sorry that people driving up and down Route 8 were offended and even thought we were a part of it.
But we want the community to understand that the Legion had no part in this propaganda and worked quickly to diffuse and remove the situation. We pride ourselves in our outstanding committment to our Veterans and our Community that we serve. Although some people went to the extreme and left nasty voice mails and emails to the Legion about this incident, I can only say that we are sorry that it happend. We live in difficult times right now, and it doesn't take much to send people into a tizzy, but at the end of the day please be assured that you can count on Your Kent Island American Legion Post 278 to always do the right thing. I hope you accept our apology. I can't promise that something wont ever happen again like this, but I can promise that the Legion main priority has absolutely nothing to do with politics (for or against) but rather ensuring our Community is supported in every manner possible that we can.
